But what does that mean for us as individuals? Reducing our waste is an easy, affordable action supporting BIG MOVE #6: Close the loop and shift toward lower carbon consumption. The above photo is of one of the three bears that The above photo is of one of the three bears that were killed by conservation officers after a Whistler woman was found feeding them for 3 months in the summer of 2018 - and recently fined a whopping $60,000 for doing so. As much as it can be tempting to think that we help bears by feeding them, doing so actually does the opposite. Feeding bears is dangerous for us and the animals, because “once bears learn to associate humans with food, it creates a public safety risk.” As bears are entering hyperphagia this fall (a period marked by eating up to 20,000 calories a day in prep for winter), we need to remember that the most helpful thing to do is to NOT feed the bears. If you or someone you know is seeing increased bear activity in residential areas, make sure to contact BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) at 1-877-952-7277 or 604-905-BEAR. Presented by the Whistler Naturalists Society, this two-day mushroom festival unites fungophiles around presentations and guided walks by mushroom experts, as well as a gourmet wild mushroom tasting and a mushroom display, which allows participants to gather, share, and explore the day's finds. AWARE is proud to be the charitable partner for this Whistler Naturalist’s annual event.
